Lab Members

Lingru Xue
Associate Specialist
[email protected]
Lingru joined Dr. Nguyen’s lab as an Associate Specialist at UC Davis in 2012. The lab moved to UCSF in 2016 and established a close collaboration with the lab of Dr. Davide Ruggero in March of 2016. She received her BSc in Biology from Lanzhou University, China and MSc in Biochemistry from McGill University, Canada. She studies the unfolded protein response (UPR) pathway using PDX mouse models of prostate cancer that recapitulate human prostate cancer and the molecular mechanisms underlying the signaling pathway regulation and tumor initiation, progression and metastasis of CRPC.
Kevin Shee is a fifth year Urology resident at the University of California, San Francisco. He graduated cum laude with his BA from Harvard University in Molecular and Cellular Biology. He completed his PhD at Dartmouth in the lab of Dr. Todd Miller, with a focus on tumor microenvironment-mediated drug resistance and novel therapeutic opportunities, and was the recipient of the John W. Strohbehn Medal for Excellence in Biomedical Research as the top graduating PhD student selected by the Dartmouth faculty. He completed his MD at Dartmouth, receiving the S. Marsh Tenney Research Award for excellence in biomedical research. He has authored 50 indexed publications (h-index 19, i10-index 31), the majority of them as first-author, in high-impact journals including Nature, Science, European Urology, and more. He is also the recipient of multiple awards and grants for his research, including a Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA) Fellowship (F30) grant from the NCI/NIH and the AUA Resident Research Scholar Award. His current research interests include the application of precision medicine to the diagnosis, surveillance, and treatment of urologic cancers, and investigating the role of the tumor microenvironment in urologic cancer pathogenesis and response to therapy. He hopes to pursue a career in urologic oncology at a major academic institution, and to be a major contributor and leader in the field.

Lia joined Dr. Nguyen and Dr. Ruggero’s labs as a Research Associate in February 2024. She received her BS in Biological Sciences from UC Santa Barbara. She previously worked in the Lue lab where she studied stress urinary incontinence, cavernous nerve regeneration and endogenous stem cell activation. She studies the unfolded protein response (UPR) pathway using PDX mouse models of prostate cancer that recapitulate human prostate cancer and the molecular mechanisms underlying the signaling pathway regulation and tumor initiation, progression and metastasis of CRPC.
Katherine Nguyen
Laboratory Assistant
[email protected]
Katherine joined the lab in the Summer of 2024 as a visiting undergraduate student. She is entering her second year at the University of California, Irvine, majoring in Biological Sciences. While learning about biomarkers for metastatic prostate cancer, Katherine is also working on learning basic molecular biology techniques and other lab techniques. In the future, she plans to continue exploring her research interests in oncology and apply to medical school.

Erica Luu
Laboratory Assistant
[email protected]

Erica joined the Nguyen lab in 2024 as a volunteer Research Assistant. She attended University of California, Berkeley where she received her B.A. in Public Health. She has experience as a Hypertension Management Coach through the Roots Clinic and Blood Pressure Project, and she has done child spatial cognition research in the Gopnik Cognitive Development and Learning Lab. Erica is currently learning lab skills and experiments while working with the PDX mouse models of prostate cancer. She plans to apply to medical school in the future and explore specialties in oncology, cardiology, or pediatrics.
